Anna Karenina: Hands, Gesture, and Perfume

Joe Wright's Anna Karenina inspired a perfume character study. Odin, Diptyque, and Arquiste made the cut for Levin, Kitty, Anna, and Vronsky. Equally Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's choreography greatly captured my attention and imagination. His use of heightened and precisely articulated hand and gestural movement during the cathartic dance scene of the film created a passionate sequence, and a refreshing way to continue to understand the characters of the epic story. Actors taking a break or a director framing an image/idea can be so telling.

Misty Morning, Enchanted Forest EdP, The Vagabond Prince

Clarence Hudson White,  Morning, 1908

It's after the New Year, and the brownstoned streets of Brooklyn are lined with the fallen fir trees of Xmas. This year on an unusually warm and misty morning this well-balanced mix of H2O and Evergreen created the perfect ecosystem to bring these same Xmas trees back to life for one last hurrah. With every step pine and balsam rose from the pavement and hovered in the air, giving me insight into this spirited fragrance.

Reduction is a word that comes to mind when I smell Enchanted Forest. In cooking reduction heightens flavor, similarly Enchanted Forest feels as if some of its notes have been "reduced" to allow us to experience the many heightened aspects of one note, in particular the blackcurrant (the leaf the bud the fruit the liqueur) and fir balsam (the pine needle the Russian Forest the earth the expanse.) This forest is not a white frozen wintry one where the animals are hibernating, instead this forest is alive, moist, mossy, and lush that links the blackcurrant and evergreen. This is not to say that this fragrance is limited to two notes, the opening alone is a rush of movement that involves citrus/spicy/boozy and aldehydic notes, just take one look at the detailed (and transparent) list of notes and story here
www.vagabondprince.com

The Enchanted Forest is a dream realized for Elena Knezhevich and Zoran Knezevic Co-Founders of Fragrantica. Bertrand Duchaufour expertly created this "blackcurrant soliflore." This is a joyful fragrance, celebratory and festive. The opening is so alive, but as it settles its mystery and darker side lurks just around the woodsy trail.

Vero Profumo: Vero Kern and the Boys

The other night I broke out some new found oils. The boys and I smelled haitian vetiver, virginia cedar, egyptian basil, saffron, orris root, and galbanum together. Their little hands wanted to hold each bottle, but I kept a tight grip. Next to the oils were Vero's three, Rubj, Onda, and Kiki. A friend was visiting and I wanted her impression on the three, and of course the  boys wanted to try them too. I tickled them as I spritzed the fragrance on their arms. Soon after they wanted me to turn off all the lights so they could dance. I gave in and turned the volume loud, Moves like Jagger played and we danced together in the dark. The living room whirled with Vero's masterful scents.  In the Spring, Onda made me write to Vero mostly because there's nothing quite like it. It's stellar. I was touched by Vero's tender response and recollection.

"The idea behind Onda was to create a kind of leather scent. Something that has fascinated me since my childhood. Being a child in a big family I didn't get very often new leather shoes. But then when it happened I couldn't get enough of this fantastic smell and I used to put the shoes next to my bed where I still could smell them in my dreams. Onda is also the memory of the smell of new leather shoes..."

"Onda means wave. It can be the wave of water but also of electricity! In my case I've chosen it in the sense of a "FLYING CARPET" bringing you to your secret garden..baci, Vero"
